Visualizing Change Over Time

The EO Dashboard allows users to independently explore indicators, but it relies on visual interpretations to understand what is changing and where. How could the Dashboard do a better job of highlighting significant change, and point the user in the right direction?

Project Terrain

Summary

The EO Dashboard plays a pivotal role in understanding the distribution of various data and along with the availability of worldwide information, it also enables to compare the activity across several locations. Over the passage of time, the data in Earth Observation (EO) dashboard may come across many changes. As we saw, the covid-19 pandemic has already brought considerable amount of changes just in a year, which calls out the necessity of a solution to determine the visualizing of changes effectively. That is how our "Project Terrain" was born, where our prime motto is to ensure the accessibility of the data in EO Dashboard directly to everyone, irrespective of age and location.

How I Addressed This Challenge

What we developed is a prototype, where every person can access to any location in the EO dashboard all around the world. Among the conventional changes happening in the EO dashboard, the covid-19 pandemic has made everything undergo immediate changes and that is where the importance of our 'Project Terrain' comes up.

The EO dashboard helps to focus on evey details in a much more interactive way, giving access to users to any specific zone or city they wish to explore.

The "Project Terrain" ensures the users to have complete accessibility to the data in EO Dashboard without any limitation, since it can be accessed by a person of any age, location and it isn't even focused on their technological background.

Through our Project, what we are hoping to achieve is a universally accessible EO dashboard, filling all the details of any significant events transpired over the past. Completely technological-driven, what makes the Project Terrain even more interesting is that it does not need any technological requirements as well as user-friendly.

How I Developed This Project

The challenge 'Visualizing Changes Over Time' seem an interesting one to all of us, where we could explore our creativity and apply all of our skillsets in the same. Moreover, we could learn many new things throughout the making of project.

As we already know, there are no enough localised data available through the dashboard and it is normal that every resident in a city will be concerned with the data of his/her city. Also, it would make an effective way to get some real world connections in data and to gain insights through raw data. Hence, we thought it would be better to come up with a solution for this and motivated us to think about a prototype incorporating these changes and some more.

We extensively used the tableau software, along with graphic designing and thorough research.

Talking about the achievements, we took some relevant datasets and made our own visualizations. Then started studying and analysing them in detail. The collaboration of our team was really appreciating from start to finish. And about the problems, we faced difficulty while accessing more data and the API's. As the Tableau software wasn't solely for planetary sciences, it also posed a problem on the way, but we managed it all so good till the end without many complications.

How I Used Space Agency Data in This Project

Throughout the project making, we made use of the data captured by ESA TROPOMI, NASA OMI, JAXA GCOM-C SGLI.

We had downloaded the datasets from the EO dashboard and analyzed them using Tableau Desktop. This detailed analysis helped us in obtaining insights of the data, thereby bringing effective solutions to the existing problems.

Project Demo

Earth Observing Dashboard Integration

For the moment, our solution cannot be integrated in the EO dashboard, but we had provided solutions in our demo slides that can be improved the EO Dasboard.
