Visualizing Change Over Time

The Challenge

The EO Dashboard allows users to independently explore indicators, but it relies on visual interpretations to understand what is changing and where. How could the Dashboard do a better job of highlighting significant change, and point the user in the right direction?

Background

The Earth Observing (EO) Dashboard shows how Earth has been affected by changes in human behavior due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Users can explore how indicators like air and water quality have been impacted over time and across geographies. The Dashboard offers the possibility not only to investigate global products, but also to zoom into a select number of spotlight areas that have higher resolution products. Users can move back and forth in time and visualize the indicator on the map.

Objectives

The Dashboard allows users to independently explore indicators, but it relies on users’ visual interpretations to understand what is changing and where. The Dashboard doesn’t provide tools that allow users to quickly understand where the most significant changes are occurring, both in terms of space and time. How could the Dashboard do a better job of highlighting significant change, and point the user in the right direction?

Potential Considerations

  • The output of this challenge can be broad. It could be a live prototype that highlights change in indicator data from our application programming interface (API).
  • It could be a set of mockups showing how you would visualize this on the map, or with other elements of the dashboard interface.
  • The sky is the limit!
