Glimpses of the World Unprepared for the COVID-19 variant outburst

Summary

The rapid global widespread of novel covid-19 viruses lead to World Health Organization (WHO) to declare outbreak as pandemic. The proposed visualization in the form of geomaps and bar graphs depict the COVID-19 status across the continents till the end of June 2021. The results generated for the challenge undertaken, helps the concerned authorities classify red zones based on current infection rate, mortality and the rate of vaccinated population.

How I Addressed This Challenge

The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak has fostered devastating effects on the global economy and the health of entire global community. Although the COVID-19 survival rate is high, the number of daily infected cases across the globe needs to be visualized. In this challenge, Visual exploratory data using EO in VueJS Framework has been proposed. The dataset loaded via online Tableau has been proposed. There are three OpenStreetMaps rendered globally for from last year to June 2021. The map for country-wise new COVID-19 infected cases, along with a bar graph for three continents has been included in the first dashboard. The second map for COVID-19 mortality rate along with a bar graph for better insights is deployed in the second dashboard. The third dashboard visualizes vaccinated details population-wise along with a bar graph representing data from three continents. All the geomaps are rendered with data from OurWorldindata.org website.


Such insights help the WHO, government and local authorities deploy more healthworkers improve medical facility and ramp-up vaccination drive to help combat the virus outbreak.

How I Developed This Project

The COVID-19 pandemic outbreak has devastated the whole world and lead to a state of worldwide health emergency. Several efforts and measures have been taken to combat this pandemic. In this challenge, the population, new cases, vaccination data and infection rate and mortality rate of COVID-19 patients has been visualized in three separate dashboards. The unprecedented collaboration among the three space agencies namely NASA, EASA and JAXA has fostered the integration of satellite data with analytical tools in its COVID-19 Earth Observation Dashboard. The proposed visualization in dashboards have been loaded in VueJS framework for easy integration with the Earth Observation dashboard.


Tools:

1.     VueJs – Dashboard software for integration with COVID-19 Earth observation.

2.     Tableau – Online tableau to visualize the satellite data as graphs

3.     Openstreet maps – to visualize the data in a geomap

 

Approach:

·        VueJS is a Progressive JavaScript Framework to creates webpages at ease.

·        Create worksheet for each visualization and deploy it in the Tableau online dashboard

·        OpenstreetMap tool is also used to visualize the geodata in the global data maps by customizing the dataset uploaded.

·        Then the basic embedding of tags from Tableau website to VueJs script connects the dataset with the webpage

·        VueJS instance is instantiated.

How I Used Space Agency Data in This Project

This challenge focuses on COVID-19 based on freely available datasets from https://ourworldindata.org/covid-vaccinations. Data analytics is performed on a number of COVID-19 indicators such as new infections and mortality rate using Tableau. Moreover, data visualization is provided comparing of infections, mortality and vaccination data across the various countries in the globe using OpenStreetMaps.
