The COVID-19 pandemic strongly affected global logistics and supply chains, and hence shipping activity. This challenge asks you to target the characterization of dynamic shipping activities as seen from space.
We used Sentinel Hub EO browser to download Sentinel-5 data for NO2 in the Irish sea for March 2019 and March 2020 along with links for 2019 and 2020 quarterly shipping data and current wind data (unfortunately historical wind data requires a paid subscription).The shipping data shows an overall decline of 44%The wind does not appear to be coming from a land mass or other source of NO2, leading us to believe that the NO2 concentration over the Irish Sea is due to shipping.
We would have liked to develop a way to pull data from ESA, JAXA, and NASA to quickly compare NO2 and SO2 levels upwind of major ports, as well as shipping traffic volume, during different time periods and then run a t-test to find differences.
Our approach was to determine if we could detect a difference in offshore NO2 and SO2 levels in the troposphere at different time periods and correlate with shipping volume. We began with python in JupyterLab but had setbacks with our EDC workspace in the form of access and then importing necessary data from ESA and other sources. We were only able to go as far as attempting a proof of concept for our methods using Excel and manually downloading datasets individually. We also could not find/access historical offshore wind data without a paid subscription to a service such as Windy or Windfinder. Shipping throughput data from NASA was also limited to only 4 ports worldwide.
We used space agency NO2 data from Sentinel-5 downloaded from EO Browser.
Our solution is not complete or ready for integration.
