Agricultural Impacts of COVID-19

Remotely sensed data can provide information about conditions on the ground that may affect food supply chains and food security during pandemics. Your challenge is to demonstrate the agricultural socio-economic impacts from COVID-19.

Impact of COVID19 and Environmental Factors on Lower Mekong Region for Rice Crops

Summary

The Covid19 had a great impact on rice cultivation in lower Mekong region especially Vietnam along with draught & flood. So by accepting this challenge We have developed an Analytical Visualization Report of Environmental & Covid19 Impacts on Agricultural Rice Crop Production In Vietnam. According to our team Analytics & Visualization we can make Interpretations and Technical Implementations which can act as an Important & Essential tool which we can be considered useful for the assessment of COVID19 Impacts and to assess vegetative harvesting areas for Agricultural Production which along with the COVID-19 restrictions gets affected due to Natural Disaster like Vietnam Floods & drought 2020.

How I Addressed This Challenge

What did we develop?

We have developed an Analytical Visualization Report of Environmental & Covid19 Impacts on Agricultural Rice Crop Production in Lower Mekong Region where we’ve considered the Vietnamese Data through NASA, ESA & JAXA Resources into our report.

Why is it important?

It is important and essential because as Vietnam is the Third Largest Producer & Exporter of Rice Crops Globally. It is the main source of their Socio-Economic Development through Agricultural Production Growth, which actually disturbs the entire nation through many several factors along with the COVID19 Impacts resulting into the nutritional growth, economic growth, health improvement gets affected and also their urban societal behavior gets affected.

What does it do?

According to our team analysis & observations, our project do the needful or essential “Assessment & Demonstration from Spatial & Temporal Data”, Especially of the Impacts on agricultural production by using publicly available time series trend information along with the demonstration of the agricultural socio-economic impacts from COVID19 with respect to the restriction of human movement in that particular regions and its relatable areas of the lower Mekong region of the rice crops.

How does it work? and How To Implement?

By using the Environmental Factors on which our Agricultural production is dependent like Air Quality, Precipitation, Temperature, Land Area of Rice Crop regions especially with the focus on Mekong River region along with the other major areas which are being used by the Vietnamese farmers to harvest Rice Production and using the Mobility Data from EODashboard like Transportation, Grocery Markets & Recreation to assess Restriction of Human Movement in the country which is essential to grow rice and also to generate Income through it for their socio-economic developments.

We considered these factors where with the help of our Analytics and Visualization we can make Interpretations and Technical Implementations which can act as an Important & Essential tool which we can be considered useful for the assessment of COVID19 Impacts and to assess vegetative harvesting areas for Agricultural Production which along with the COVID19 restrictions gets affected due to Natural Disaster like Vietnam Floods, Landslides & Storms in 2020. Due to this Environmental change which we observed through data from JAXA ALOS-2 | PALSAR-2 and Sentinel-1, these factors potentially cause loss of life, damage to property (for example their farming lands), loss of agricultural crops and livestock. It also increase the incidence of disease where other side one important measure of the cost of such damage is economic losses resulting into migration of 90000+ people (According to The Guardian Report) from their flood affected native homes or the places where mostly locals who live on farms but have other jobs have also lost income where they do their struggle to earn bread & butter.

Covid19 has already caused food insecurity at many parts of the country as the economy and incomes dropped during shutdowns and due to such migration movement when whole nation was facing COVID19 lockdown, access to transport and recreation was restricted which causes the barrier for them to obtain resources for their agricultural productions as they started facing problems like purchasing the agricultural inputs such as seeds, fertilizers and in several other necessary requirements to sell out their harvested stocks, which could be only possible through the access of Transportation Along with the global freight (According to Hanoi Times & Statista), Grocery Markets and Recreation areas like Market places and access to banks because due to such Covid19 Restriction to Human Movement in country almost many farmers faced the limited access to credit or other financial barriers to make out good agricultural-socio-economic growth..

In many part of the Vietnam access to clean water is emerge out as a problematic issue both because of the Floods & Drought and because of the emphasis on hand washing in national Covid19 awareness campaigns. It is obviously the fact that many areas gets affected by not having enough clean water for drinking and sanitation which result as facing bad Infection Prevention Control measure by taking both Covid19 and Disastrous illnesses into considerations as health & nutrition is also one of the essential factor which should be addressed while taking any environmental and epidemic changes into considerations. Now by using NASA, ESA & JAXA Resources along with the Mobility & Environmental data provided on their EODASHBOARD, we can conclude the given points for Technical Assessment via developing the tools & methodological solutions that are given below:

1.   Early Forecast Detection of Disastrous changes like Vietnam Floods and Droughts etc. & Natural Changes like Air Quality, Precipitation, and Temperature, through analyzing the Environmental changes for the Environmental Management or lifesaving volunteering programs.

2.   Early Infection Prevention Control as per WHO Guidelines, which was actually necessary during the epidemic global lockdown/shutdown due to sufferings like COVID19 Impacts.

3.   Organizing Early Educational or Awareness Development Programs to educate everyone for the betterment of their societies/youth as well as to improve their earning opportunities or livelihood which was mostly gets affected during the Covid19 shutoff through which survival of poor and helpless was very difficult.

4.   Early Diagnosis of Fore-coming Impacts on Vegetation’s and Crop managements to launch better preparedness of solutions.

5.   Our Innovative Solutions through our Assessment & Demonstrative report will help the nation to implement good required policy frameworks for the betterment of societies and the people of the nation, as per the early detections & analytics and much more...

What do we hope to achieve?

On the basis of ESA & JAXA Resources through their Spatial and GIS technologies along with their EODASHBOARD data we tried to developed few Innovative Implementations which can be integrated into EODASBOARD and can be used publicly through APP or Software to become useful for the poor farmers, workers & labors of the nation to take necessary action on time with the early detection of the Environmental Changes as well as by using the Algorithmic Decision making Interpretations of government actions which was suddenly taken in favor of life saving situations to keep everyone safe from the Virus interaction or spread-over in current pandemic situation which our entire planet is suffering.

How I Developed This Project

What inspired our team to choose this challenge?

In the context of COVID19 Impacts, We were looking for something which can come out as a pain point for the life sustainability for human beings as well as the other beings relatable for considering the lifecycle on our planet. Therefore, we tried to find out what actually affects the life on The Planet Earth where our understandings lead us to the Nutritional & Health related factors which are essential for the life on Earth. We found that demonstrating the Agricultural Socio-Economic Impacts from Covid19 is something which can be considered as an essential challenge where we can take its importance to address the losses or to analyze the changes during pandemic lockdown. We observed that Covid19 has already caused so much of problem with restrictions on life of Planet Earth where Agriculture is something which directly affects the Nutrition & Health of every living creature on the planet, but during the pandemic If we carefully analyze all of the sudden changes then we’ll realize the Environmental Factors actually affect the Agriculture on The Planet, in return Agricultural problems can cause Socio-Economic troubles for everyone which was again Impacted by Covid19 restriction as a result changing of their urban societal behaviors, which was acting as a Global Challenge for every kind of survival. Here are the given reason that we’ve taken into consideration for choosing this challenge where we considered Vietnam as a specific area of lower Mekong region:

  1.  Globally, Vietnam Is the 3rd Largest Rice Producer in the World.
  2. Rice is considered as a staple for close to half of the world's population and therefore production remains robust alongside economic growth and population with Asia being the largest consumer, and Rice accounts for up to 50% of daily caloric supply.
  3. Covid-19 Had a Great Impact in Rice Production in Vietnam Along With the Flood & Draught Which affected Vietnam in 2020 During the Covid19 Pandemic, where first time ever in a decade Vietnam had to Import 70,000 tons of Rice from India due to the Pandemic. (According to VIETNAM TIMES, HINDUSTAN TIMES & BBC ARTICLE)

What was our approach to developing this project?

The approach towards the project is divided into the following phases:

  1. -> The first phase of the task was to analyze the requirements of the project. This included the shortlisting of useful resources.
  2. -> In the second phase, the shortlisted resources were used to gather data and then the gathered data was analyzed. This analysis included (but was not limited to) the plotting of graphs to study the trends of environmental factors over Vietnam and interpretation of images obtained from satellites to analyze the areas that were affected by natural anomalies such as floods.
  3. -> The third phase provides the future scope of the project that provides the flexibility of extension (to incorporate the future amends in the project as suggested in the previous sections of the report- How does it work? How to Implement? And what do we hope to achieve? ) to the project.

What tools, coding languages, hardware, software did we use to develop our project?

The tech stack used in the project includes Python and libraries Matplotlib, Pyopenxl & Panda for plotting statistical data that includes rainfall, temperatures and percentage yield data varying seasonally in different parts/cities of Vietnam respectively

We have used ArcGIS 10.8 Version, ERDAS Imagine for overlays of Administrative Boundary of Vietnam & Mekong River, Flood Affected Areas, Harbors and Rice Production Area with the analysis of Precipitation & Temperature.

Adobe Suite Programs like Adobe Photoshop for Image corrections, Adobe Illustrator for Vector rectifications that we used during our development of the project, Adobe After Affects for callout titles & Adobe Premier Pro for Video Rendering.

Microsoft PowerPoint for preparing presentation and exporting that into PDF format.

What problems and achievements did our team have?

  1. We tried to get as much as data we can get from EO-Dashboard and through its resources but In some Websites it was difficult to access The Hyper spectral Data in case of MODIS Satellite data , However in that case we tried to correlate all the Covid-19 Situations and all other Environmental Factors which are relevant to assess this project by using the data through JAXA ALOS-II and SENTINAL-I,II.
  2. Also as having not much Knowledge about Satellite Data, It was some what difficult for us to study and assess the Interpretations through given resources and to analyses the precise factors which we can correlate to our observations properly at sub-section tab in the challenge sections of resources & indicators where few spatial & temporal data was provided through NASA , ESA & JAXA satellites But Finally we got a guidance from our friend found through Hackathon Chat Section, who's currently studying GIS and remote sensing or who helped us.
How I Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We try to use data for plotting the Vietnam flood affected areas due to which Vietnam suffered great losses in terms of factors like Environmental Imbalances, Food Insecurity, Health related problems, Infection Prevention Control due to bas sanitation and hygienic perspectives along with the major loss of economic imbalances, we used the space agency data to assess Mekong River area by showing the incoming & outgoing drop-points of river into sea water or to highlight the Mekong River Delta to compare it with Red River Delta & Northern Central & Coastal Area too analyze or assess the Percentage Yield Ratio of Rice-Crop Production area wise, we tried to analyze the Harbors of Vietnam which was affected due to COVID19-Impacts as Transportations, Grocery Markets & Recreation areas was restricted in the Pandemic along with restriction of human movement in the country where Grocery Markets & Recreation areas through EO-DASHBOARD showed us the places which were the Important part for cultivated rice crops market to generate financial earnings or incomes for economic growth which was affected the survival due to incapability of economic stability of locals in Vietnam. We tried to visualize that by comparing JAXA-ALOS2 and Sentinel country area observation with the shape file of Boundary layers, where we put overlays of shape files Using ArcGIS for assessment into ERDAS IMAGINE and our purpose was to show the relevant affected region through the observed analysis report for which we did “Assessment & Demonstration from Spatial & Temporal Data”, Especially of the Impacts on agricultural production by using publicly available time series trend information along with the demonstration of the agricultural socio-economic impacts from COVID19 with respect to the restriction of human movement in that particular regions and its relatable areas of the lower Mekong region of the rice crops.
