Looking at the Big Picture

The COVID-19 pandemic offered an unprecedented opportunity to look at changes in the Earth system in response to reduced human activity. Your challenge is to develop tools to better understand changes in the interconnected Earth system as seen through the EO Dashboard.

A drop of water means life

Summary

It is important to ensure that we all have good clean water to drink that is not contaminated by heavy metals or chemicals. One common pollutant in a water supply is lead in old pipes or paints that can leach into the water and cause lead poisoning. There are different kits available for testing the presence of lead and other contaminants in water. Test your water supply, and also the water in some local ponds, lakes, or streams. The same contaminants that can harm you can also harm wildlife

How I Addressed This Challenge

Our project on purifying water and making it drinkable is important because it will protect us from diseases caused by water pollutants. It is also easy, inexpensive, and environmentally friendly. We hope that our project will spread in developing countries, especially Africa, to address water problems.

How I Developed This Project

This challenge inspired us because many countries lack water and many people die due to lack of water, so we thought about this project and

We used modern technologies such as potassium permanganate to sterilize the water

How I Used Space Agency Data in This Project

The data will prepare us to find our idea and use satellites to find out where the water is and to know the countries that lack water

Project Demo

There are two points for obtaining water and transferring it from the river, a point on the river shore and another point in the middle of the river. These points are illustrated by the huge pipes that were equipped with metal nets to prevent the transfer of dirt and fish inside these pipes. A pump was set up to withdraw the water from the river and then the water moves to the first sterilization stage It is a tank for adding potassium permanganate, and the task of potassium permanganate is to control the taste and smell of water and prevent the influence of microorganisms, as well as remove colors, and then containers for adding chemicals, where first, adjusting the acidity by adding sulfuric acid, secondly, using polyammonium chloride as a buffer to remove small particles, third The basin shows the deposition of dirt in large volumes, separated from the water course. Then the water that was removed from the floc is returned to the control room in the inlet water, then the second sterilization stage is done. Ozone is added to the sterilization and improve the taste and smell of the water. Then the water is filtered through the activated carbon granules and sand to machines the organic materials and with high efficiency to remove the biological and other pollutants, and then the The last sterilization stage, where there is a container to add chlorine for sterilization, then fluorine treatment and adjust the acidity using ammonium hydroxide
