Storytelling in the COVID-19 Era

The longer human activities are changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the more visible, wider, and longer lasting the scope of environmental impacts may be. Your challenge is to tell a visual story about the impacts of the pandemic using Earth observation data and other complementary information.

What killed our air?

How I Addressed This Challenge

Storytelling tells the story of our planet, which was strong, intelligent and very proud of its magnitude and which was able to continue generating life after life. But at some point, something went wrong, when one of their much-loved species began to develop to the point of putting an end to it all. Wounds arose in that atmosphere, with smoke, toxic gases, danger. The imbalance began to take on devastating proportions. In one of its attempts to eliminate this species, came the fearful Covid-19 pandemic, which marked the beginning of the 20s of the 21st century, responsible for the death of more than 3.9 million human beings, including children, young people, adults. and seniors. And that, despite the enormous efforts of humanity, continues to spread and victimize more and more people due to human neglect over the centuries that destroyed the quality of the air, increasing the lethality of the virus that attacks the most important vital function of the species, breathing . The story serves to show in a didactic way how the quality of the air we breathe is influenced by ourselves.

Excess causes harm. Due to the unbalanced presence of Nitrogen, it forms nitric oxide that tends to oxidize in the atmosphere, forming nitrogen dioxide (NO2). This gas is prominent mainly from the burning of fossil fuels, automobiles and industries in general, increasingly contributing to the degradation of the ozone layer while corroding this chemical formation, favoring global warming and also being present in the construction of rain -acid that, in addition to destroying plant cover, destroys human heritage and acidifies various natural compounds that are consumed by humanity on a daily basis. Air pollution is also a big problem that has even been discussed by the World Health Organization due to the way it has been affecting the health of all humanity in contact with its own pollution.

Through Storytelling, we democratize educational information about air quality, what compromises it and how we can solve it by reducing nitrogen dioxide emissions, showing that together we can fight the problem. We can lessen our impact to stop extracting more resources than we can make up for, and a good start would be to use technology and innovation to our advantage while we can. Based on our research, the biggest source of the problem for the condition our air is in is ourselves, so it's up to us to solve this.

How I Developed This Project

To develop our project we started thinking about how Covid-19 pandemic affeccted our lives in general. After some time thinking we started to look for some data to understand what was happening to the environment during the pandemic. We had some difficulties analysing the data because of some lack information about locations that we wanted to talk about in our project, but after a lot of research using other sources we could reach data that showed us that the air quality got better during the pandemic so we decided to talk about it in a creative and informative way using an illustrated narrative to introduce the topic.

The illustrations were made using the software "Krita" and then they were transferred to "Microsoft Power point" in order to organize better the narrative.

How I Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We decided to use space agency data in our project to improve our theoric base. To explain the problem is much important to consider every solution and explain how you can offer the differential using the storytellig. That´s why we needed Nasa and their partners to our conclude our project. To our search we used the resources to prove that during the pandemic year the air was more health than two years ago, outside of the pandemy.

Earth Observing Dashboard Integration

Our solution could be integrated into the Earth Observing Dashboard by showing people how covid-19 affected planet's air quality using a dynamic and interesting storytelling. This could be done adding the slide presentation on the website.

Data & Resources

We use this data to make the connection between busy traffic and atmospheric pollution.

This was useful for comparing pollution levels during the Covid-19 pandemic around the world.
