Storytelling in the COVID-19 Era

The longer human activities are changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the more visible, wider, and longer lasting the scope of environmental impacts may be. Your challenge is to tell a visual story about the impacts of the pandemic using Earth observation data and other complementary information.

Changes in greenhouse gases during covid-19 pandemic and impacts to climate.

Summary

Covid 19 pandemic has some positive outcomes as well as negative. Environmental impact caused by the pandemic is one of them. Especially the air quality. The data graph shows how the amount of greenhouse gases dropped down with the pandemic. Climate changes might happen with these conditions. And the satellite images show the reduction of nitrogen dioxide due to the lockdown. It has already made changes to the transparency of the air.China and India are two of top countries who have cleared their atmosphere with the lockdown.Overall, the global air quality has taken some positive impacts from the Covid 19 pandemic.

How I Addressed This Challenge

Our challenge is to do a visual storytelling on the environmental impact of Covid 19 pandemic. One of the most important aspects of this, is the impact on Air quality.

We made a presentation and a video clip to demonstrate our idea. We compared satellite images of areas, as before and during lockdown. And presented the effects done by the pandemic on air quality.

We tried to give an idea about the air quality change (which happened because of the Covid 19 pandemic) and its effects through our presentation.

How I Developed This Project

As Team Aurora, When we first overlooked the challenges we realized that 'Storytelling in the Covid-19' is the most appropriate challenge for us. We can generally talk about the global changes and challenges to the whole world during this pandemic time.

We started our project by gathering some data and information about global air pollution and sudden climate changes.

We concluded several Zoom meetings to keep the work stream flowing and used our personal computers and software applications like MS Powerpoint, Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Wondershare Filmora to make our project more attractive.

How I Used Space Agency Data in This Project

The data from NASA and ESA were very important to build up our challenge. We used NASA and ESA data from the eodashboard. The dashboard was the main data source for our challenge. We used global air quality indicators, greenhouse gas indicators, covid-19 data as well as the satellite images that were in the dashboard.

As we referred to many data in the eodashboard, the challenge seemed to be comfortable although it was quite hard. It also gave a nice flow to our project.

Earth Observing Dashboard Integration

Earth Observing Dashboard was our main data source. We gave priority to its data. We were worried about the lack of data earlier but when we noticed we can gather data on greenhouse gases directly and more efficiently from EO Dashboard even before and during lockdown periods around the world.

The graphs, satellite images shown on the EO Dashboard were very useful for us. We used them much as possible to make our project interesting.

So, Eo Dashboard was helpful for us. We want to thank them all who helped us to find relevant data.
