Storytelling in the COVID-19 Era

The longer human activities are changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the more visible, wider, and longer lasting the scope of environmental impacts may be. Your challenge is to tell a visual story about the impacts of the pandemic using Earth observation data and other complementary information.

Stay alert to the next pandemic

Summary

In the past two months, the Covid situation turned better across Europe. We saw countries like France, Germany and Italy loosen their social restrictions. While we see queues outside restaurants and people hanging out in bars again, we should stay alert to the next wave, variant or pandemic.

How I Addressed This Challenge

This project is a tool showing the resumption of social activities in Europe over the past two months by using EO data and compiling news, survey results and interviews.

It aims to give users a handy way to see how soon people have resumed their social life. Reopening is good news. But we must not forget what we experienced last summer. The good signs could be short-lived. The project encourages users to stay alert.

(p.s.: This is the broad project idea. At the moment the deliverable is not ready. Nothing is available for publication.)

How I Developed This Project

We were inspired by the fact that in the city we lived in, people no longer wear masks outdoor even on crowded streets.

As this is a storytelling project, a human touch is important. We tried with data on EO Dashboard, Sentinel Hub and Planet and used Euro Data Cube. We mainly used Python.

For qualitative data, we searched news coverage, interviews and surveys. We think data on EO Dashboard, Sentinel Hub and Planet show insights. To be closer to audience, we need to add more human dimension. We aim to make the quantitative data relate to ordinary audience.

The biggest problem was time constraint.

How I Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We compiled mobility, activity, NO2 concentration data and the like to try to provide a more three-dimensional picture of the resumption of activities in Europe.

Earth Observing Dashboard Integration

First we have to implement and then test. To make the content richer, we have to add more parameters and data sets. To make the deliverable fun, we need multimedia content beyond data visualization.
