Storytelling in the COVID-19 Era

The longer human activities are changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the more visible, wider, and longer lasting the scope of environmental impacts may be. Your challenge is to tell a visual story about the impacts of the pandemic using Earth observation data and other complementary information.

EARTH IS HEALING-A MUCH NEEDED BREAK FOR EARTH

Summary

Two Aliens reach on earth and to collect drugs from the Amazon rainforest to cure the pandemic affected for them. They got an EO dashboard from a spy Alien. They observed it to get the earth data. The air and water pollution rate can be observed with the indicators provided in it,and the alien shaped indicator will provide the data of ozone layer, air pollution rate, its control measures and the polar ice melting rate also.Pre and post covid data also available in it.As human were quarantined, nature began to heal her wounds. Earth was trying to teach her children the right and wrong. They both return to their planet, realising that their planet was too trying to teach them the right and wrongs.

How I Addressed This Challenge

Our challenge is to tell a visual story about the local, regional, or global impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our story simply describes the impacts of COVID-19 on agricultural fields, Air, Water and industrial activities.

Our team has developed a simple story describing how the COVID-19 has affected on various aspects of human life, and we have also mentioned the levels of greenhouse gases before and after the COVID-19 outbreak and also shown its impact on industrial and agricultural activities, and also we mentioned about the quality of air and water.

Visual story telling about the impact of COVID-19 on various aspects is important in order to understand what all changes had happened before and after the outbreak of COVID-19. It also provides information about the impact on environment and on human lives.

What our story does is it provides the information about the changes in NO2,CO2,CO levels before and after the COVID-19 outbreak and also provides how the pollution rate, agricultural and industrial activities changes due to this COVID-19 impact.

It provides the information graphically, and also provides an explanation about the impact on various aspects.

Our team "SPLASH AZTECS" hope to achieve that how the changes in green house gases affects the ozone layer and also by what amount the industries should reduce their emission in order to decrease the pollution rate.

How I Developed This Project

In the wake of the Covid-19 epidemic, the world is waiting for innovative ideas that will bring about a lasting change. We choose the storytelling as the most suitable medium to fly into the world of ideas. We are starting a new story by stepping into innovative ideas.

Covid-19 is not only an epidemic, but also a recognition too. The realization that the nature has too been facing an epidemic through various forms of human exploitations over the years. When the humans had to be confined to their homes without being able to control the pandemic, the nature had chosen this occasion to heal her wounds and we called that time frame as "Lockdown" .

The nature began to purify the polluted air, water resources, and the soil. We need to think deeply about these changes in nature and human beings. Analysing the data before and after Covid-19 can bring changes and developments that based on the nature conservation. By integrating these data to the EO dashboard makes it easier to analyse and follow up.

We are planning to add more indicators to the EO dashboard which can provide more data regarding the air pollution, water pollution and ozone layer depletion. For that we are going to use software tools and coding languages to create such indicators on the EO dashboard.

Our objective is to create a new indicator which is having the symbol of an alien and that contain sub-indicators within it. Then the sub-indicators includes ozone layer data indication, ozone layer thickness, ozone depletions and the pre and post covid-19 comparative studies on ozone layer. The next sub-indicator indicates the carbon monoxide emission rate and the next sub-indicator will provides data about the polar regions, polar ice melting rate and the characteristic changes occurs in the polar region. The next and the last sub-indicator provides data about the pollution rate of a selected region and it will provide scientific measures to reduce the pollution rate to a predefined rate and will also provide the rate to which the industrial and vehicle exhaust to be reduced in order to reduce the pollution rate to a lesser value.

How I Used Space Agency Data in This Project

In our story we mainly collect data from EO dashboard, Earth data COVID-19 dashboard and from some newspapers. The data from EO dashboard and Earth data COVID-19 dashboard has mainly contributed in our story making. Various indicators in these dashboards helped us a lot such as indicators like Air quality indicator which helps us to understand the quality of air in various regions. It also provides the graphically represented data of CO2, NO2 so that we can easily understand what changes had occurred during this pandemic. For the impact on Agricultural and water bodies part of our story various agricultural indicators and water quality indicators helped us a lot for collecting data and it also high lights various areas so that we can get a clear idea of what we have searching for. We also used some news paper data to support the contents in our story.

Earth Observing Dashboard Integration

Our solution is an indicator which should be integrated to the EO dashboard. The indicator will be in the shape of an alien and it will be situated in the top left corner of the EO dashboard. By clicking on the alien symbol we will be provided with a list of sub-indicators.

In the provided list of indicators first one is a diamond shaped icon, by clicking on it the diamond shaped icon will be split into two and that are a green colored and a violet colored diamonds. The green colored diamond icon will provide the data about the ozone layer by comparing the NO2, CO and CO2 rates available in the EO dashboard, and the data includes the thickness if the ozone layer in the selected area, the ozone depletions and the width of the ozone depletions. It also predicts the chances of depletion in the ozone layer in the coming years in the order of their priority. Then the violet colored diamond icon provides graphical data about the changes occurs in the ozone layer before, during and after the covid-19 pandemic.

Next is the red buzzer shaped icon, which is the CO emission rate indicator. It will separately provide the CO emission rates from vehicles as well as CO exhaust rate from the industries in the selected area. Next is the blue hill shaped icon, which will provide the detailed data about the polar region. By comparing the data of air pollution indicator, greenhouse gas emission indicator and the CO emission indicator, it will calculate the polar ice melting rate and will provide detailed characteristic changes occurs in the polar region. It will also provide the comparative studies related to the polar ice melting rate before, during and after the covid-19.

Next one is the blowing bell icon, it will provide the pollution rate and temperature of the selected area and a badge will appear which indicates whether the selected area is having a critical, moderate, or a low pollution rate depending upon the predefined categories of data. It also contains a sub icon which is in the shape of a pendulum. By clicking on it we will get a chart that contain different sample pollution rates and these values will be lesser than the current pollution rate. By selecting a value among them we will get a detailed chart that will contain the measures to which the vehicle and the industrial exhaust should be decreased and it will also provide scientific measures to reduce the pollution rate in the selected area.
