Storytelling in the COVID-19 Era

The longer human activities are changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the more visible, wider, and longer lasting the scope of environmental impacts may be. Your challenge is to tell a visual story about the impacts of the pandemic using Earth observation data and other complementary information.

Affect of COVID 19 Pandmeic on NO2 Density in India Air Quality (2020-2021).

Summary

COVID 19 has already affected economy ,health and social life all over the world. This project specify and covers the NO2 concentration of specific areas in INDIA. COVID 19 period has shown a clear picture of changes of NO2 presence in specific area. As in COVID 19 Lockdown imposed, which means No Work and No people mobility. This project also shows one new intresting fact on NO2 density in Air after COVID LockDown-UnLock period get over. This Project include Data Analysis Report, Graphs and Details. Studies are done on the basis of NASA and ESA NO2 TROPOMI satellites images(Please refer to Links are added ).

How I Addressed This Challenge

On working in EO DASHBOARD satellite images of NO2 TROPOMI (NASA and ESA) for india region. I consider four region DELHI ,MUMBAI, SINGRAULI, CHATTISGARH { cities : Korba, Bilaspur, Raipur and Durg }.

Considered Areas Highlighted for project completion ( satellite image link)

[[

DELHI & NCR(national capital region )- Highly populated and industrial area.

MUMBAI- highly populated & industrial area .

SINGRAULI(madhyapradesh)- Numbers of Thermal power stations & coal mines.

CHATTISGARH( korba ,bilaspur, raipur ,durg)- Numbers of steel plants and industries.

The studies are done over a period from February 2020 to June 2021 .According to ESA and NASA images, the studies shows that the concentration of harmful gas NO2 gradually decreasing during COVID 19 lockdown and unlock period .After and Before lockdown the concentration of harmful gas NO2 is at high density.

In first lockdown(25 Mar - 31 May, 2020) Delhi, Mumbai shows gradually decrease of NO2 concentration upto 90% approx whereas Singrauli and Chattisgarh region is showing less decreasing of NO2 concentration upto 60% approx as compare to Feb 2020.

An Example of satellite Image

In first unlock period Phases(1 Jun - 30 Nov, 2020), only Delhi shows little increasing in NO2 concentration upto 30% approx at the end of the year 2020, whereas Singrauli and Chattisgarh region shows increasing of NO2 concentration upto 100% approx as compared to Feb 2020.

An Example of satellite Image

From December 2020 to Feb 2021- Mumbai, Delhi, Singrauli & Chattisgarh region shows super high density of NO2 concentration as compared to ( Feb to Nov) 2020.

**note- As country comes to normal stage the mobility and industries started very aggressively, It can be easily conclude from data. It also lead to high NO2 concenteration in air.

An Example of satellite Image

In second lockdown (15 April - 31 May, 2021) Delhi and Mumbai shows decrease in NO2 concentration upto 70% approx as compared to Dec2020 - Feb2021, whereas Singrauli & Chattisgarh shows No Changes.

The importance of these findings in the projects is to highlight the change of NO2 concentration with respect to COVID 19 situations time to time.

This project will help to identify the degree of air pollution in highly populated and industrial areas with respect to non working and working suituation.

The details, graph and data of this project - works to analyse and to take steps to control air pollution of highly populated and industrial areas in future.

PROJECT FINDINGS

This project shows that the NO2 concentration in studied areas is gradually increasing and decreasing over the period of time with respect to covid 19 situations. The NO2 is a harmful gas and its having huge impact on enviroment as well as in human health.NO2 gas affects ozone layer, green house,Vegetation and Air Quality in enviroment. It also effects human being health it causes lungs disease problems also it affect the development of childrens age. As country comes to normal stage after a long period of Lock and Unlock suituation the mobility and industries started very aggressively, It can be easily concluded from data ( Dec2020 to Mar2021). It also lead to high NO2 concenteration more in air, if compared to a period before First Lockdown - 2020 . So It is noticed that after Lockdown over and the country is returning back to their operations, The aggression will be there, As people and industries are closed due to COVID 19 suituation. suddenly this will also tend to increase the NO2 density more fastly. Industries and people mobility is essential for developement of country economy but project findings shows that it is also affecting enviroment too. There should be some steps or attention need to be taken to balance enviroment as well as country development.

How I Developed This Project

I have been always interested and curious to know about happening(pollution) around the world in term of global warming and air pollution. I has already written few articles on global warming and green house effect. I am Student and my parents always helps me in my works. This project i completed by studying EO DASHBOARD with the help of my parents.

I approached NASA and ESA satellite images on EO dashboard.

The tools and software i used to develop this project are :-

EO DASHBOARD

microsoft world

microsoft excel

microsoft window paint

microsoft window 10 (64 bit)

Achievements:-

NO2 concentration analysis over a period Feb 2020 to June 2021

Explore of COVID 19 situation over a period of time with respect to air pollution degree

This project present a Picture of the upcoming future. Attention is needed.

Problems:-

The satellite images from ESA NO2 TROPOMI is clear when zoomed to maximum as compared to NASA OMI images in EO Dashboard.

However data shown on ESA satellite images and NASA satellite images are close to similar.

Satellite Image Of ESA zoomed Vs Satellite Image Of ESA zoomed

How I Used Space Agency Data in This Project

Above are used to make this project .The data from the above describes space agencies help me alot to evaluate, to analyse and to develop this project.

Earth Observing Dashboard Integration

I suggest this project (details and graph) should be added to EO DASHBOARD under category of air pollution indicator of India. One can easily find and conclude the difference of change of air pollution over a period of performing and non performing of industries and vehicle mobility.
