Storytelling in the COVID-19 Era

The longer human activities are changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the more visible, wider, and longer lasting the scope of environmental impacts may be. Your challenge is to tell a visual story about the impacts of the pandemic using Earth observation data and other complementary information.

Looking Through a New Lens

Summary

The main motive of this project is to link economy of city Mumbai with its air quality. We believe that economy and air quality are highly interconnected as shutting down of industries and reduction in the use of transportation leads to lesser amount of greenhouse gases to be released into the atmosphere. So, we tried to find the relation between the losses of economy during covid-19 and the decrease in pollution. We also built an air quality monitoring system to record the amount of particulate matter in the atmosphere.

How I Addressed This Challenge
  • We found data to find the relation between air quality and economic indicators.
  • Economy and air quality are highly interconnected and go hand in hand with one another. If there is a change in one, there is almost certainly a change in the other. This project tries to find that change in both of them.
  • If industries and transportation of a city stop, then air quality of that city gradually recovers.
  • During this pandemic, a lock down was imposed in the city and more than half of the service sector shut down, which led to a loss of about $2.1 billion USD.
  • Air quality in Mumbai- greenhouse gases reduced from about 4 parts per million to 1.3 part per million.
  • Our team calculated that in every reduction of one part per million greenhouse gases, the economy suffered a loss of about $1.5 billion USD.
  • We used earth observation hackathon data to find the untold relation between economy and air quality.
How I Developed This Project
  • We wanted to tell a story that was previously unknown to everyone. So, this was the best challenge to do that.
  • We used all the data from the Earth observation hackathon and some additional data to develop this project.
  • We also built an air quality monitoring system which measured the amount of particulate matter in the atmosphere. We used data from our observations in this project.
  • We used software analysis to compare the amount of greenhouse gases in maps in different regions.
  • We had some problems in finding data of losses of economy of Mumbai because the data of economic studies was scarce. But in the end, everything worked out fine and we are satisfied with our end product.
How I Used Space Agency Data in This Project
  • All data regarding air quality was taken from ESA and the interactive tool made by NASA, ESA AND JAXA was used to find all data.
  • Slowdown proxy maps which had the data about slowdown of various activities in the region of Mumbai.
  • Data regarding the economy was scarce in the earth observation hackathon data for the city of Mumbai. So, we used data from other interactive data tools available on the internet.
  • This data formed the basis of our project and it was the most important thing to tell the untold story of relation between economy and air quality.
Earth Observing Dashboard Integration
  • This data can be integrated into the earth observation hackathon as a collective indicator of air quality and economy.\
  • It tells a lot of things which are untold. So, it can be uploaded as data for people who want to use it.
