Storytelling in the COVID-19 Era

The longer human activities are changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the more visible, wider, and longer lasting the scope of environmental impacts may be. Your challenge is to tell a visual story about the impacts of the pandemic using Earth observation data and other complementary information.

Alien civilisation picks up strange Signal from Earth

Summary

The project consists of a video that creatively invites people to cooperate towards helping humanity deal with the COVID crisis by using Earth data accessible through the Earth Observing Dashboard.Project video: Alien civilisation picks up a strange signal from EarthLink to video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EfZKQ_VB4n8Challenge: Storytelling in the COVID-19 Era.

How I Addressed This Challenge

This project invites people to explore the Earth observing dashboard using the power of storytelling. In the story presented in this project, a strange signal from Earth is picked up by an alien civilisation that is initially reticent to help humanity because of humanity's troublesome past. Humans explain to a benevolent little alien that, this time, it is not their fault, and that they need help. After learning this, the little creature agrees to introduce humans to the Earth Observing Dashboard, a platform their alien civilisation has created in space to see everything Earthlings do on a global scale.

How I Developed This Project

I developed the video via a free video editing platform (clipchamp.com). The idea of presenting the EO dashboard in the context of an alien civilisation that helps humanity by allowing them to use their technology occurred to me while I was thinking of how to use the power of storytelling to present the Earth Observation Dashboard in a way that would awaken interest from people of all ages and backgrounds.

How I Used Space Agency Data in This Project

In the project, I include a video in which I recorded my computer screen while I was navigating through the Earth Observing Dashboard to explain to the viewer that data from several countries can be accessed through the dashboard and how that data is separated into several indicators such as air quality, planting activity or night lights.

Earth Observing Dashboard Integration

The challenge I addressed was Storytelling in the COVID-19 Era, therefore it does not need to be integrated into the EO Dashboard.

Data & Resources

In the video, the following data is used to illustrate the power of the Earth Observing Dashboard:

Nightlights in San Francisco, USA (provided by NASA).

Slowdown Proxy Maps of the Port of Ghent, Belgium (provided by NASA).

Productive Area of Brandenburg, Germany (provided by the satellite Sentinel-2, operated by ESA).
