The longer human activities are changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the more visible, wider, and longer lasting the scope of environmental impacts may be. Your challenge is to tell a visual story about the impacts of the pandemic using Earth observation data and other complementary information.

Summary

The Outbreak-Verge of Apocalypse is a prototype game designed in order to give every individual a virtual experience of controlling the pandemic situation of a place. Taking different actions as per the observation of the statistics, utilizing the economy for infrastructural development and vaccines, in the game, can save the place from pandemic. The prototype game challenges all to win the pandemic. Overall maintenance of both pandemic and happiness of the people leads to total success in the game. This game is for letting everyone know the impacts of COVID - 19 and teach everyone to get it controlled. It makes everyone aware of the COVID - 19 situation and makes all capable of handling it.

How I Addressed This Challenge

What did we develop?

We developed a prototype game, “The Outbreak - Verge of Apocalypse”. This game provides a visual experience of controlling the pandemic. One gets the control over the actions to be taken to bring the pandemic into control. The game provides an opportunity to have a challenge to pandemic and fights against it.

Why is it important?

This game is important for an individual to learn about the control to the pandemic. This game teaches one to take the action looking after all the aspects. COVID – 19 pandemic is a badly spreading pandemic and has created number of issues. One must be capable of handling such situation. It makes the player capable of handling the situation. It makes everyone to realize the necessity to be completed at the time of pandemic. It teaches all to cope up with the situation to get victory over pandemic.

What does it do?

The prototype game provides interface for an individual to enter to a control room. The room from where he/she can take control to governmental actions. Being provided with the rights to take action and buy vaccines as well as establish hospitals, the player can do as their wish but they must be able to get control over the pandemic. Actions they take brings influence in the COVID statistics.

How does it work?

The game works under following instructions:

1. The major task is to get the place saved from increment of COVID by applying different actions.

2. Player can move into the control room using arrow keys, roam around it and look for a laptop, a mobile, a microscope and console for improvement of infrastructure.

3. By using microscope, virus and mutation can be viewed.

4. Using laptop the status of people and COVID in the area can be viewed. It’s represented with a bar diagram with a total limit of 100% for every bar.

5. Mobile can be used to take the action in the area for getting it saved. The actions include: Social distancing, curfew, institution closing and transportation restrictions.

6. It is necessary to note that each action causes an effect to the bar in 30 seconds.

7. For example; actions decrease COVID, economy and happiness as well.

8. After COVID getting more than the limit, death starts to happen. Similarly, virus do have the chance for getting mutated. We shall be careful if we are notified with the mutation.

9. Required infrastructure can be developed moving to the console section, that manages COVID.

10. We again must be careful: If death goes to 100 or happiness leads to 0, your game will get over.

These are the instructions on the basis of which our project works. The prototype game makes one to have a real time experience of control on the pandemic.

What do we hope to achieve?

We expect every individual going thoroughly with our project to get to know about the various impacts created by the COVID - 19. With the same we also expect them to learn about the handling of the situation in the time of this pandemic. Being a ruler to control the situation of pandemic makes one experience a most difficult state of one's life. Finally, we hope to achieve the success of every individual against the fight with the pandemic.

How does the Project address the challenge?

Our challenge looks for the impacts created by the pandemic. The project we made consists of the impacts that the challenge is looking for. COVID – 19 statistics shows the impacts created by pandemic in a clear view. Increase of COVID – 19 resulting to the death in the statistics, different actions taken in order to minimize the spreading of the COVID are the impacts clearly seen in the project. In the same way actions decreasing the economic condition of a place is also one of the impacts of the pandemics. Thus, impacts of COVID – 19 can be viewed in the prototype game i.e., our project and therefore our project addresses the challenge.

How I Developed This Project

What inspired our team to choose this challenge?

The challenge we chose is more nearly related to the politics. Observing and analyzing the pandemic situation, we were into a conclusion that world is having problem with the proper handling of the situation of the pandemic. The countries that were able to handle the pandemic in the well managed way were successful to fight against it whereas the countries that were not able to do so suffered a lot. Therefore, we designed the project so that every individual can understand about the step to be taken during such pandemic and to make them learn about the impacts if appropriate steps are not taken.

What was our approach to developing this project?

We approached to the project first by building the skeleton idea. Then we preceded towards the programming part. We tried to keep as much as information we can in the proto type game. We designed it in such a way, that it could cover different aspects of the pandemic. Finally, we made a summary video of our project with full description of the project.

What tools, coding languages, hardware, software did we use to develop your project?

The tools, coding languages, hardware, software that we used to develop our project are:

1. Unity 2020.3.11f1 – For game development _ Level and UI design

2.C# - For game development _ Game programming

3. Canva – Development of posters, logo for team and the project

4. Dell Inspiron 3531 and HP 15 laptops as hardware or tool for the completion in designing of project.

5 Adobe Mixamo - Character models and animations

What problems and achievements did our team have?

There are many problems we faced at the total time interval. The main problem at the beginning was to think of the project. It was difficult deciding the perfect idea of our project. Next, after beginning the project we had to move through number of bugs in the programming. After trying to much extent we finally were successful to complete the project as per our thought. The completion of the project was the greatest achievement our team had.

How I Used Space Agency Data in This Project

Earth Observing Dashboard was one of the main sources for the collection of information in our Project. The data from various indicators i.e., economic, agriculture, health, air and water were observed and analyzed before the beginning of the project. Data collected from economy and health in the Earth Observing Dashboard have been completely utilized in the prototype game – “The Outbreak - Verge of Apocalypse”. All the percentage increment and decrement in the various factors we have included in the game i.e., COVID – 19 rate, mutation of the virus, economic impact, death rate including economy for vaccinations and infrastructural development in COVID – 19 are in relation to the conclusions drawn from the study of COVID – 19 data of various countries in Earth Observing Dashboard.

Therefore, the data provided by EO dashboard is a base for the development of our project.
