Storytelling in the COVID-19 Era

The longer human activities are changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the more visible, wider, and longer lasting the scope of environmental impacts may be. Your challenge is to tell a visual story about the impacts of the pandemic using Earth observation data and other complementary information.

Atlas

Summary

The project is a visual representation of the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak socially and environmentally. It shows several characters through their normal lives, and after the outbreak. The aim of the video is to show a different perspective for the impacts of the pandemic, by comparing the characters’ lives before and after it. The video also shows how the environment was impacted and represents some direct and indirect impacts of the COVID-19 outbreak. It has a moral which nearly everyone can relate to and feel what the characters feel. Several statistics and photos from the EO Dashboard are used in the project. A famous quote for Nietzsche is used to explain more for the audience.

How I Addressed This Challenge

We are telling a story, using digital art, that is representing how the COVID-19 outbreak has led to numerous changes in social activity, which in turn had an impact on the psychological side of people of different ages and responsibilities, and even had an environmental impact.

It shows how after COVID-19 and the lockdown, many people's lives were impacted, and how they first thought that things are becoming out of control, then realizing how their lives changed to a better version, with being able to face fears they weren't able to face before.

These various changes happened to every individual around the world directly or indirectly, and every person was impacted by the outbreak. Our aim is to make people watching this video relate to the characters who were suffering in their perspective and didn't realize how it was necessary for these changes to happen, in order to become this version of themselves.

The story represented in the video will help people watching the video to consider giving a chance for themselves to see the impacts of the pandemic from a big picture, and focusing on the lessons of the outbreak. It will encourage and remind them of appreciating the presence of their loved ones around, and giving more attention to small things like being able to breathe, taste, smell, socialize, and other several activities.

The aim of this video is mainly to show the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak psychologically (on individuals and on the whole community), and environmentally. It has a message for people about how it is necessary for them to find some meaning in the suffering and survive. Other problems were discussed unconsciously through the stories represented as it relates to the different aspects of our daily life during quarantine: panic, fear of being unwanted, depression, losing jobs, dependability, and insecurity.

How I Developed This Project

As the COVID-19 outbreak had a direct or indirect impact on every individual in this team, we thought we could tell a story about the suffering of the whole community, and include some social and environmental impact,

Our approach was to reach as many people as possible with this story, make them relate to, and focus on the moral of it.

Our approach was to demonstrate how the Covid-19 era was vital for current and future generations. It reveals how desperately the world needed this break, despite the negative aspects of this era, which included a lot of deaths, quarantine, and job losses. Our aim is to showcase the advantages of such a pandemic, as well as how the globe is adapting to future disasters. Medical demands, online working, and environmental concerns have all become increasingly prevalent now.

In this project, we used Krita program to create the digital visuals seen in the video, Microsoft photos for the video editing, and Narakeet for Synthetic Voiceover.

The most challenging aspect was figuring out how to collaborate on a project virtually. This period of the hackathon was extremely beneficial in helping us realize how important it is to collaborate not just on a project but also in our daily lives. Together, we were able to think about, create, and submit this proposal using online conversations and Zoom sessions.

How I Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We used data from the EO Dashboard to observe the environmental and psychological impact on people. This includes the statistics and photos represented in the video.

Our goal was to work on crisis management and to illustrate how a pandemic (global crisis) could be a solution for other problems the world was already facing. So, we used researches made about the Blackout of Puerto Rico 2018 to show this.

Earth Observing Dashboard Integration

Each portion of the earth observation dashboard can be customized with different interactive video stories. In our video, for example, several effects of covid 19 were depicted, ranging from psychological to environmental. The environmental impact part can be used in the section of the observed data of environmental changes to facilitate and ensure the understanding of the data to the viewers and how these data and numbers were present in the real world, for future generations.
