Storytelling in the COVID-19 Era

The longer human activities are changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the more visible, wider, and longer lasting the scope of environmental impacts may be. Your challenge is to tell a visual story about the impacts of the pandemic using Earth observation data and other complementary information.

The labor crisis that affects women as a result of COVID-19

Summary

The following project illustrates through a story the impact of Covid-19 on the economy of working women, especially those women who work in the original towns of the Loa province - Chile, being the most affected by this pandemic, where Most of them lost their livelihoods almost immediately, without any network or possibility of replacing the daily income in general, especially those women who make a living from cars, who, as a result of the closure of borders or mobility restrictions, are unable to sell their handicrafts, running the risk of falling into poverty, as well as those women who work in agriculture.

How I Addressed This Challenge

Our team wanted to develop a story through a video that shows the economic impact that the pandemic has caused in the world, especially in the unemployment that women of the original peoples of the province of Loa - Chile have had to face due to the health crisis, had to withdraw from the sources of work to dedicate himself to the care of children and relatives. It has also paralyzed tourism with the closure of borders, where communities have been affected by not being able to sell their handicrafts, being mostly women.

For us it is very important to carry out this projector, because it would allow to generate an environment for reflection on a problem that requires greater attention in our society.

Our project aims to reach different parts of the world using various social networks, the project is carried out through images that were obtained with the EO dashboard earth observation panel in order to make people aware of what is happening. happening and stay informed on the matter.

Finally, we hope that this video will sensitize governments, institutions and private parties to seek projects that help the women most affected by the pandemic.

How I Developed This Project

Over time it has been shown that human activities in general have changed, so much so that mobility data, data from airports in performance, data from ports in operation, etc. show that they have decreased significantly, in the same way there have been environmental change generating anthropogenic impacts both negatively and positively depending on the area in which it affects. All of this previously said is caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, that is why we, when choosing the challenge "storytelling in the COVID-19 era," want to raise awareness and imply what could affect the pandemic to diverse people, specializing in a single category which is the woman who, because of everything that happened, they cannot carry out their craft work, social work, merchant, etc. Causing a decrease in income and, therefore, producing changes in the woman's lifestyle. We developed this challenge through a video, so we decided to do it with the help of the Filmora X program, which is a video editing program that simplifies the advanced editing functions. Like any project, over time we as a team had different problems throughout its development, one of them was the development and choice of what we would focus on to work on, since we had different ideas, since we had A very wide choice, another of the problems was being able to get together as a team, because not everyone could at the same time for various reasons, but as a team we not only had problems, since we also achieved several things as a team such as learning about topics associated with COVID-19 and also learning to use the observation panel that helped us a lot in this challenge, since it provided us with enough information such as data on covid-19, mobility data, greenhouse gases, etc. which helped us to complement the project with data.

How I Used Space Agency Data in This Project

Our project used data from the NSA, ESA or JAXA to determine how the spread of COVID-19 affected agriculture in the world and thus be able to compare them with the data provided by the Government of Chile. With the help of the Global Agricultural Monitoring of the Earth Observation Group (GEOGLAM) Global Crop Monitor we were able to determine that there are places where agricultural productivity was the most affected, directly affecting the labor field of women, according to UN indicators .

The data from NSA, ESA or JAXA were also used in our project to determine how it affected mobility in the world, as well as in the province of Loa-Chile, where it allowed us to verify the low mobility of tourists in the area of Los indigenous peoples during the pandemic.

Earth Observing Dashboard Integration

Our solution could be integrated into the Earth Observations Panel as a space for reflection on the impact that COVID-19 has generated, and how the data provided by this platform affects people's lives in different areas (economic, social , etc.).
