Storytelling in the COVID-19 Era

The longer human activities are changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the more visible, wider, and longer lasting the scope of environmental impacts may be. Your challenge is to tell a visual story about the impacts of the pandemic using Earth observation data and other complementary information.

Dajao in Europe

Summary

Dajao in Europe is a web page, here we talk about changes in economic and environmental activity in Italy (quality water and quality air) for the COVID-19 pandemic and distancing recommendations and related restrictions. We using Earth observation data and other complementary data before and later the COVID-19 pandemic. this makes it an easy way to compare. we are inspired by animation of article about Line 12 of the Mexico City metro collapsed for the new york times.

How I Addressed This Challenge

What did you developed? The Dajao team created a proyect called "Dajao in Europe", it's a web page where we'll count the economic and environmental impact of the pandemic of COVID-19 due to the decrease of human activity using geospatial information and Earth's daily images before and after the pandemic.

Why is it important? To know this information in order to understand the effects of human activity on nature

What does it do? As we read the information on the web page, we'll find sequences of images of the Earth describing the economic-environmental daily impact in Italy due to the pandemic.

How does it work? By animation of images created by VUEJS, it'll show the change of geographic zone according to its filter (water quality, air quality and economy) using the mouse scrolling.

What do you hope to achieve? Present the information in an interactive and innovative way for the readers.

How I Developed This Project

What inspired your team to choose this challenge? We inspiration come from the article about the collapsed Line 12 of the Mexico City metro for the new york times

What was your approach to developing this project? Make an easier way to understand and didactic to the public

What tools, coding languages, hardware, software did you use to develop your project? What problems and achievements did your team have? Frame worx vuejs, Dashboard and Node js

What problems and achievements did your team have?

We had several problems starting and finishing the project.

The first problem is that we had some problems using the new Vue framework since we had never worked with it.

When solving it, we continued to use github to work remotely so that the progress of the project could be seen more easily, but when uploading to github a folder with NodeJs modules was not uploaded, which caused some problems when trying to execute it

A problem that we took a long time to solve was using the animation libraries we need.

As for our achievements, we managed to use animations appropriately so that the page can be displayed in a better way and better understood.

We were able to explain in a simpler way and disseminate the information from the EO Dashboard

How I Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We use pictures from regional maps (NASA) to make information more interesting for reader and didactic to the people, complementing it with data from the space agency obtained from the earth observing dashboard.

Earth Observing Dashboard Integration

We going to add a menu bar into the Earth Observing Dashboard where the people can see a summary about the economic and environmental impact of the pandemic of COVID-19.
