The longer human activities are changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the more visible, wider, and longer lasting the scope of environmental impacts may be. Your challenge is to tell a visual story about the impacts of the pandemic using Earth observation data and other complementary information.
We have made a 2-minute long video that creates awareness about the environmental impacts of the pandemic using geospatial data to track these changes in the absence of on-field surveys during lockdown times. This geospatial data features data related to mobility, agriculture, air and water quality and inferences we have derived from all these. It talks about the lessons we can learn from the pandemic to work towards sustainable development. We conducted a COVID-19 IMPACT survey among 600+ people to understand the public perception of the pandemic and made a website on wix.com to document our research for the project.
We have made a 2 minute long video discussing the environmental impacts of the COVID 19 Pandemic with special emphasis on the case of India. We have also created a website documenting our work on the project.
It is important to show how the pandemic has affected our lives, our environment, and recognise the new challenges the pandemic has created for humanity. It is essential to understand the various indicators of environmental health to comprehend how and why the pandemic affects us. We compiled all such pieces of information in one place to help a greater audience understand and appreciate the fragility of our dear planet Earth!
We have talked about the changes COVID 19 brought in our lives.
The impacts of the reduced anthropogenic activities on the environment have been discussed next.
The pandemic is a reality check for humans. With our project work we wish to send a lasting message to everyone in this world to realise why this pandemic occurred in the very first place and how we need to introspect and rectify our ways if we want to survive on the planet. We end our video by enlisting the 5 major lessons taught to us by the COVID 19 pandemic as we have shown through the course of our project work.
Among all the chaos, it is important to have a broader picture of what actually happened and is happening during the COVID-19 pandemic. We felt the appropriate presentation of the various COVID-19 stories was important to have a lasting impact on the people all across the world.
Our group initially analysed data from the EO Dashboard and complementary data from the space agencies NASA, JAXA and ESA, coupled with government data. We then prepared detailed summaries of all the varied topics we were covering. Then we went ahead to prepare a video story from the knowledge we gained through this study. We have presented most of the sources and study materials on our website as well as in the references section.
The various Softwares and Tools used are as follows:
What problems and achievements did your team have?
We have created data animations and infographics from the data available to us by NASA, ESA and JAXA on the EO Dashboard. Those animations and infographics have been used to supplement the various COVID 19 stories in the video and the website prepared by us.
Global cropped area data from Crop Monitor Geoglam.
We have used the GEOGLAM crop monitor to know the current statuses of agricultural produce throughout the world and how the pandemic has been impacting crop produce throughout the world. The Group on Earth Observation’s Global Agricultural Monitoring Initiative (GEOGLAM) Global Crop Monitor remote sensing data like temperate, soil moisture to record and predict crop conditions.
The video can be directly embedded into the EO Dashboard.
