In the not so distant future, how we consume data and information will be increasingly through immersive experiences and less through existing small 2D screens.With 360 degrees of freedom, we will be able experience information like never before and remove the limitations of traditional UI interfaces.With companies like Apple almost ready to launch their consumer AR glasses, we need to start developing AR experiences for tomorrow, today.The AR proof of concept I created shows very crudely and quickly how Earth Observation data could be experienced in Augmented Reality.
All data has a story to tell. And the medium through which we tell that story is important.
How we experience information is about to change over the next few years. This change will be across all sectors, industry, commerce, education, everything.
The space and science industry is no different, it must start using immersive methods for sharing and consuming information.
Augmented Reality is one of the most powerful and engaging storytelling mediums as it is allows us to combine the real world with anything we want. All you need is an imagination.
Even though this was a week long hackthon, the poc was created on the Friday night, Saturday and Sunday (that my family were away visiting the grandparents).
It was developed using Visual Studio for Mac, Xamarin and C# and deployed to my iPhone 10x
There are a number of things I wanted to do to improve the poc but ran out of time.
As this was merely a proof of concept, I took copies of images from the EODashboard site, with a view to replacing them with realtime API calls if I got the opportunity.
However I believe the static images demonstrated the concept sufficiently.
