Storytelling in the COVID-19 Era

The longer human activities are changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the more visible, wider, and longer lasting the scope of environmental impacts may be. Your challenge is to tell a visual story about the impacts of the pandemic using Earth observation data and other complementary information.

The Covid-19 Tale: Nature Reclaiming Mother Earth

Summary

The project draws a comparison of the situations of the world before and after the onset of the pandemic by analyzing satellite images, maps and graphs from the EO dashboard. Covid-19 has been demonstrated as nature's own way of saving mother Earth from humans.First of all it shows how human beings had been constantly depleting the nature by cutting tress, usage of unnecessary harmful festicides, fuels and construction activities. The Covid-19 pandemic has caused humans to stay at home, lose all social connections, wear masks and disrupted recreational, construction and farming activities. These have been helpful for the environment to regain itself.People must learn a lesson and save the Earth.

How I Addressed This Challenge

I developed a project that aims to send a positive message to human beings by means of a story.

The Earth ,the only planet in which life has been discovered till date, was being destroyed by humans. After billions of years, the nature started reclaiming itself. The data from EO dashboard shows how after the Covid-19 pandemic human activities have decreased and air, water quality has improved. This is very important for people to realize the importance of nature and save the Earth.

It basically makes people aware of their mistakes and compels them to rectify themselves.

I hope to make the Earth a better place for the present generations and sustainable for the future generations as well.

How I Developed This Project

In the Covid-19 era, I have very well realized the importance of human connections and communications.Though everyone is in isolation, staying connected and communicating virtually is essential for life. Thus I thought of communicating with the world through means of a story and chose this challenge.

After choosing the challenge, I started analyzing the different indicators in the EO dashboard.I drew a comparision of the them before the onset of the pandemic and after that as well. The conclusion was that human activity had decreased and the environmental conditions had improved a lot. Then I started reading some news articles supporting my conclusions.I felt that nature doing the same treatment as humans were doing with her, and it was very important to convey this to the world.

As a beginner, I had faced difficulty in analysing the data from the Earth Observing Dashboard.

There are several things I achieved this week.I got to learn analysing data, found a proper platform for networking and most importantly could put some efforts for helping the world in these tough times.

How I Used Space Agency Data in This Project

The situation mentioned in the story (before and after the onset of Covid-19) and conclusions drawn are all done by analysing space agency data such as satellite imagery and graphs, charts in the dashboard.

For example:

  • Unrented cars filling parking lots in Los Angeles-JAXA,ESA data
  • Grounded airplanes in New York airport-JAXA' s ALOS-2,ESA Copernicus Sentinel-1
  • Tropomi drop-ESA,NASA satellite imagery,Copernicus Sentinel-5P Satellite, Aura satellite, Netherland's-Finlands's OMI
  • Chlorophyll levels decreasing in water-Aqua,Sentinel-3,GCOM-C
Earth Observing Dashboard Integration

The Earth Observing dashboard could be made more interactive by including short stories. Having a channel in the dashboard would be helpful,so that people could share their own opinions also.

Data & Resources

Data from:

  • JAXA's ALOS-2
  • ESA Copernicus Sentinel-1
  • Google Mobility sources(Found under the mobility section of the dashboard)
  • Copernicus SentineL-5P
  • Aura Satellite
  • Netherland's-Finland OMI
  • Aqua
  • Sentinel-3
  • GCOM-C

The scenarios demonstrated in the project have all been taken from the Earth-Observing dashboard. The data from the dashboard compelled me that this nature giving us return for our deeds.
