Environmental Justice During the COVID-19 Pandemic

The purpose of this challenge is to use remote-sensing data and satellite images to help form a better understanding of societal trends as affected by COVID-19. Your challenge is to discern how human activity in communities of minority, low-income, tribal, and indigenous populations have changed as a result of COVID-19.

Brought Together by Our Differences

Summary

COVID-19 pandemic has brought some drastic changes to the world and it can still be seen in different parts of the world. We have even faced a shortage of some basic amities like medicines, food, public transportation. But sometimes we forget that who does all this shortage affects the most. People with low-income, indigenous people, or tribal people have faced all this shortage the most. So, we decided to make a website with all the collaborative data provided on EO Dashboard by NASA, JAXA, and ESA and see how to solve the above problems. The data will give us an insight into how these people suffer and will help us find a solution to that.

How I Addressed This Challenge

The coronavirus pandemic poses a grave health threat to Indigenous peoples around the world. Indigenous communities already experience poor access to healthcare, significantly higher rates of communicable and non-communicable diseases, lack of access to essential services, sanitation, and other key preventive measures, such as clean water, soap, disinfectant, etc. Even when Indigenous peoples can access healthcare services, they can face stigmatization and discrimination. Most indigenous communities regularly organize large traditional gatherings to mark special events for example; harvests, coming of age ceremonies, etc. Some indigenous communities also live in multi-generational housing, which puts Indigenous peoples and their families, especially the Elders and children, at risk. As the number of COVID-19 infections rises worldwide, as well as the high mortality rates among certain vulnerable groups with underlying health conditions, the posed threat is increasing. Indigenous peoples experience a high degree of socio-economic marginalization and are at disproportionate risk in public health emergencies, becoming even more vulnerable during this global pandemic, owing to factors such as their lack of access to effective monitoring and early-warning systems, and adequate health and social services. As lockdowns continue in numerous countries, with no timeline in sight, Indigenous peoples who already face food insecurity, as a result of the loss of their traditional lands and territories, confront even graver challenges in access to food. With the loss of their traditional livelihoods, which are often land-based, many Indigenous peoples who work in traditional occupations and subsistence economies or the informal sector will be adversely affected by the pandemic. The situation of indigenous women, who are often the main providers of food and nutrition to their families, is even graver. This, there is a significant need for a solution to be put in place that can help raise awareness about these indigenous people who need aid from the rest of the world. To help them

How I Developed This Project

COVID-19 has left some serious scars on humanity. Due to this virus activities in communities of minority, low-income, tribal, and indigenous populations have changed drastically. In this always-changing world, we sometimes forget about these people and as a result, they have to suffer from all these conditions without any help. So, we decided to help them through the challenge of environmental justice. We have divided the projects into several different parts among the team members so that we can complete the project in time. All the codes were written on an online IDE called Glitch. Mainly HTML, CSS, and JavaScript are used in developing the website and a little PHP is also used in the making of the website. It was very difficult to find the appropriate data to be displayed so we have to sort out and exclude somewhat data.

How I Used Space Agency Data in This Project

The mobility and COVID-19 data helped our group to analyze the number of cases in certain countries, the time at which COVID-19 appeared, and when the second wave came about for certain countries. It helped us assess whether it has any relation to the indigenous community and the countries that they mainly stay in. For example, in Asia, India. The indigenous community is prevalent there and the data helped us to link the cases to that. It helped us realize that countries with more indigenous communities are more vulnerable to COVID-19 than other countries.
