Ship Traffic and the Impact on Air Quality

The COVID-19 pandemic strongly affected global logistics and supply chains, and hence shipping activity. This challenge asks you to target the characterization of dynamic shipping activities as seen from space.

Hueyatl

Summary

Hueyatl is a new way to create new commercial marine routes to achieve a significant reduction of emissions of NO2 and SO2. Hueyatl uses two different artificial intelligence algorithms. The first one helps us to identify the density and position of every ship in a specific area. The first algorithm uses NASA´s data which source is provided by the Interagency Implementation and Advanced Concepts Team. Then all the information is processed by using services like Amazon Sagemaker, Amazon Forecast and Amazon Quicksight. The algorithm takes as checkpoints every ship and generates a new path that will be the shortest in distance and time, optimizing the routes.

How I Addressed This Challenge

We created a new logistic system. We expect that the emissions of NO2 and SO2 will reduce because the new routes traced by the data collected from the communication with other ships and with an Artificial Intelligence algorithm using services like Amazon Sagemaker, Amazon Forecast and Amazon Quicksight. Also, this new solution offers a new way to identify marine traffic with a programme using IMPACT. This is a new efficient way to deliver, which means a significant reduction in time and a significant reduction in emissions with a new form for marine control and monitoring system.

How I Developed This Project

One of the reasons why we choose this challenge is because it is impressive the way that the globe is growing and with it the necessity of new commercial routes for communication, delivery, transport, etc. This is a latent problem because it implicates a lot of ships working at the same time and in the same area, causing a concentration of polluters in the air.

Our approach is to generate an efficient solution not only in delivering but also in transportation, marine control and others necessities, taking as a model the transport services on land such as Uber or other similar enterprises.

About the problems that we had as a team because of the current situation of the Covid-19 pandemic, we need to use remote communication tools to communicate with each other and listen to all the ideas and points of view of each member team.

How I Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We use the data source by the Interagency Implementation and Advanced Concepts Team, based at NASA´s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. This trained an algorithm using supervised machine learning techniques to detect ships on PlanetScope images.

For us, every ship that the algorithm recognizes, we determine it as a checkpoint. The previously mentioned tool is crucial for our project because we need to evaluate which watercraft is the nearest to our ship of interest to determine which route will take.

Earth Observing Dashboard Integration

We can confirm that the Earth Observing Dashboard takes a crucial part in the database of our project in every step of our solution because:

  1. Identification phase: We can observe our ship of interest in the dashboard and notify how far from the coast it is. For example, if we need to deliver some medical supplies, we will need to get to the port as fast as possible.
  2. Analyzing phase: Our solution can analyze the environment (Weather, Traffic, Objects, etc.) of our ship of interest. For example: If there is a huge block of ships, it means that we can not go that way not just because it is a longer route for the coast but also means more risk for an accident.
  3. Solution: Finally, we use the nearest ships as checkpoints and show the possible routes to determine the efficient one.
